Ian Adam-Smith is an Architect specialising in 'The English Country House.' He is a lover of beautiful things and a firm believer in lifestyle living which encompasses not only the 'Architecture', but the 'Interiors' within and the 'Landscape' beyond. The vision is one of a complete and coherent whole.

Ian grew up in 'Lutyens' Territory and in his early years was influenced by and worked with Roderick Gradidge (author of 'Dream Houses' and 'The Surrey Style'), having followed an article in Country Life Magazine on a Harold Falkner House that he is now working on again. Subsequently he approached and worked with John Simpson whose work he had also admired and where he worked on Classical Villages for The Duchy of Cornwall.

His own now fairly sizeable Practice was set up almost 20 years ago and comprises a dedicated and longstanding team who have been involved in over 500 Properties ranging from 'Glass Boxes' to 'Georgian Rectories'. Increasingly they are building what appear to be 'Period Houses that have evolved', but are in fact high performance 'New Build Houses'.

Ian has the happy knack of taking a blank canvas and creating out of it something characterful and charming, as witness his own homes too. He is well-known for his carefully arranged individual designs, built for real people - within a scholarly framework, yet without the need to be overly rigid. His experienced eye for developing their dreams and turning them into reality, is at the same time tempered by his in depth knowledge of the Property Market and Values as well as Budget and Planning Constraints - his quiet and persuasive charm captivating many a client and planner alike.

Ian is in touch with a large number of Property and Search Agents, Interior and Landscape Designers and Specialist Consultants. His friendly and personable style is shared by his efficient and professional team. Ian is also a people's person and nurturing of all those who go into making a project great. They can help you through all the ups and downs of a project ensuring it is a process that can be enjoyed during the course of the works as well as long after the project has been carried out.

Based in a group of barns deep in the West Sussex countryside, the practice takes on projects typically ranging in value from £250,000 to well over £8 Million, and primarily throughout West Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and London. Most of the Practice's work comes through word of mouth and personal recommendation from an ever increasingly long list of loyal and repeat Clients that feel comfortable with his inimitable style and simply enjoy Ian's Vision and the way that he likes to live.
